  Good point. I don't have a quarrel with who won what. Western civilization has been influenced mainly by great thinkers who lived north of or around the Mediterranean sea. I don't know what my life would have been if history takes another route, but I am grateful for the ancient Greeks and Romans and those who came after and picked up where they left off. My opinion is not to demonize the winners. It's only my opinion about a man who dared cross the Atlantic at a time when nobody dared. He deserves more credit than Charles Lindbergh for doing the same thing, but not much more.

  As a Libertarian, I don't care if all towns in the South start erecting statues of David Duke. It's their call. Tearing down statues is a local issue. Anyone has the right to put the statue of their favorite character, as long as it's done with his/her own money. My main point that I tried to make ad nauseam is that Columbus is overrated.

  Agree. To the winners belong the spoils and the opportunity to write history. However, a good and objective history course should not be just about the people who won. Even Herodotus, the father of history, 2,500 years ago described in great details the life of the Persians. Kudos to him.

  Yes every European settler's human life improved. Unfortunately, the lives of those that were abused and killed by those settlers can't make that claim.

  Believe me, I don't have an issue with history as it unfolded. I am not Indian, nor European. I am a mixture of Middle Eastern, Spaniard and American Indian. And I don't give a f*&k about any ancestry. What troubles me is the Eurocentric narrative of history of the American continent.

  I don't think I have made a single reference to Columbus being bad. It's up to the people in his time and place to make that call (Europe 15th century); same goes for the Indians. All I am saying is that he is overrated in a time where great ideas matter more than navigation skills.

  Because it's not just a matter of deeds. It's intentions that matter even more. Columbus was not interested in spreading freedom and equality for all. Such idea didn't exist yet in his time. MLK advocated and defended precisely that, freedom and equality for all.

  Yes, a segment of the population that has been screwed since time immemorial. Columbus affected the entire world, mainly the segment of the population was already at the top of the heap and open the doors to that group to intensify the use of black slaves. Columbus helped indirectly with the abuse and exploitation of the segment of the population that MLK helped in their final quest for true freedom and equality.

  MLK, hands down. I wouldn't be very enthusiastic about creating a holyday for him though. Kids need to stay in school a little longer. Government employees too need to try a little harder to earn those fat pensions that are bankrupting every government in the world.
